Solar Thermal Systems

You are here:

Reduce your carbon footprint and your energy bills

Solar Thermal Hot Water Systems are a renewable energy source that harnesses solar heat and energy by capturing the energy which is radiated by the sun within solar panels or collectors.

Solar Thermal Systems use solar panels (collectors) which are usually fitted to your roof. These absorb heat from the sun and use it to heat up the water stored in your hot water cylinder.

A conventional boiler or an electrical immersion heater can be used as a supplementary heat source when there isn’t enough available solar energy.

What’s more, solar water heating can provide up to 60% of your annual hot water requirements.

The benefits of solar thermal systems

Will a solar thermal system really work in the UK?

Contrary to popular belief the amount of solar radiation received across the UK makes our country ideally suited to delivering a highly efficient solar water heating system.

The solar heating map highlights the medium to high intensity of sunlight received across much of the UK, and as you can see Devon and Cornwall enjoy the best levels within the UK.

At South West Plumbing we fit the highly efficient Worcester-Bosch Greenskies range of solar thermal systems, which utilise both direct and indirect sunlight.

How cost effective are Solar Thermal Systems?

The Worcester-Bosch Greenskies solar thermal systems offer an extremely efficient way of generating free hot water from the sun.

The only small associated cost of running a solar thermal system will come from the pump which moves the solar fluid down from the panel or collector to your hot water cylinder. This pump however will only run when the temperature in the panel is 8°C higher than the hot water cylinder, reducing your electricity requirement. Greenskies solar thermal systems will also benefit you due to their low maintenance design.

The cost of having a solar thermal system installed is likely to vary considerably between different properties.
