How Much Does a Heat Pump Cost?
June 5, 2025Part 4 of our Air Source Heat Pump Series
If you’re new to heat pumps, it’s normal to have questions—and maybe even a few doubts. With lots of conflicting information online, we’re here to give you the facts. In this blog, we’re answering some of the most common questions we get and debunking a few popular myths along the way.
❓ Do heat pumps really work in winter?
Yes! Modern air source heat pumps are designed to work efficiently even when outside temperatures drop below freezing. They’re used widely across Scandinavia and colder parts of Europe—and they still deliver reliable, efficient heating here in the UK.
💡 Do I need underfloor heating to get the most from a heat pump?
Not necessarily. While underfloor heating is ideal due to its low-temperature requirements, heat pumps can work just as well with correctly sized radiators or fan-assisted units. As part of your system design, we’ll make sure your emitters are suitable.
🏠 Is my home too old for a heat pump?
💷 Will a heat pump save me money?
It can. Heat pumps are far more efficient than traditional gas or oil boilers—especially if your home is well insulated. You can also benefit from lower electricity tariffs, and if you combine your heat pump with solar panels or battery storage, your savings could increase significantly.
🔧 Are heat pumps high maintenance?
Not at all. Heat pumps are low-maintenance systems, but like any heating setup, they should be serviced annually to keep them running efficiently and to protect your warranty. Our team offers full aftercare and servicing packages for peace of mind.
🛑 Is it true they can’t provide hot water properly?
Heat pumps can absolutely provide hot water—they just do it differently. They heat water to lower temperatures than a boiler, so the right size cylinder and usage habits are important. We design the system around your household’s needs so you won’t run out.
🧊 What if there’s a power cut?
Your heat pump relies on electricity, just like a gas boiler with controls. If you’re concerned about power cuts, battery storage can be a great backup option—especially when paired with solar power.
🏆 Bonus: Don’t I need a new build or ultra-modern home to install one?
Absolutely not. The key is system design. At South West Plumbing, we carry out detailed room-by-room heat loss calculations to make sure your heat pump system works perfectly in your home—whether it's a new build or something more traditional.
