How Long Does a Heat Pump Last?
June 5, 2025Part 5 of our Air Source Heat Pump Series
If you're considering making the switch to a more sustainable heating system, one of the first questions you’re likely to ask is: “How much will a heat pump cost me?” And more importantly - “Can I get help with the cost?”
In this blog, we’re breaking down the typical costs, what’s included, and how the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) can make the transition far more affordable.
💷 What’s the average cost of a heat pump?
The cost of installing an air source heat pump varies depending on your home’s size, existing heating system, and what’s required.
Here’s a rough guide:
- Small to medium homes: £12,000–£18,000
- Larger homes or more complex systems: £16,000–£20,000+
This includes:
✔ The heat pump unit itself
✔ A hot water cylinder
✔ Smart heating controls
✔ Pipework and radiator upgrades (if required)
✔ Full installation by qualified engineers
✔ System design and MCS certification
🏡 What can affect the cost?
A few key things can increase or reduce the cost:
- The size and layout of your home
- Whether your radiators or pipework need upgrading
- The need for a new hot water cylinder
- Insulation levels (which can affect system size)
We provide a free home assessment and full room-by-room heat loss survey to create an accurate, tailored quote for your property.
✅ Government Support: The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (£7,500 grant)
If you're replacing a fossil fuel boiler (oil, gas, LPG or electric), you're likely to be eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)—a £7,500 government grant to help fund your heat pump installation.
There’s no complex paperwork—as your MCS-accredited installer, we apply on your behalf and deduct the grant from your installation cost.
💳 Are finance options available?
Currently we do not offer finance options, however, we will update this guide if we are able to offer finance in the future.
🌍 Long-Term Value
While the upfront cost may seem high compared to a gas boiler, heat pumps are cheaper to run, offer longer warranties, and require less maintenance over time. Plus, you’ll be reducing your carbon footprint from day one.
