How to Maximise Your Heat Pump’s Efficiency
June 5, 2025Part 2 of our Air Source Heat Pump Series
Making the switch to a low-carbon, energy-efficient heat pump is a great step forward—but what actually happens once you’ve made the decision to move ahead?
Here’s our updated, accurate process so you know exactly what to expect when working with South West Plumbing.
✅ Step 1: Initial Home Assessment & Advice
We begin with a free home assessment, where we look at your current heating system, insulation, available space, and property layout. This helps us understand whether a heat pump is suitable for your home and what upgrades (if any) might be needed.
📑 Step 2: Quotation & Contract
After your initial visit, we prepare a detailed quotation and contract tailored to your property. This includes an outline of recommended upgrades, installation costs, and grant options through the Government’s £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (subject to eligibility).
If you're happy with the quote, we ask for a deposit to secure your project.
🏠 Step 3: Full Heat Loss Survey
Once the deposit is paid, we arrange a follow-up site visit to carry out a full room-by-room heat loss calculation. This step is crucial for ensuring the proposed system is correctly designed for your home's size, layout, and energy needs.
From this detailed survey, we accurately specify:
- The right size air source heat pump
- The correct hot water cylinder
- Any necessary radiator or pipework upgrades
🔧 Step 4: System Design & Planning
Using the data from the heat loss survey, our team creates a bespoke system design, mapping out how everything will be installed and operate. We also order the necessary equipment and prepare for installation day.
🛠️ Step 5: Installation of Outdoor & Indoor Units
Once everything is ready, we schedule your installation. This includes:
- Installing the outdoor heat pump unit in a suitable, well-ventilated area
- Connecting the indoor components, such as the hot water cylinder and updated radiators
- Carrying out all plumbing, wiring, and setting up the heating controls
Our fully qualified engineers ensure everything is fitted to the highest standards with minimal disruption.
💦 Step 6: Testing, Commissioning & Grant Registration
After installation, we test the entire system to ensure it operates safely and efficiently.
We will also:
- Register your installation for Building Regulations compliance
- Apply for an MCS Certificate
- Apply for your £7500 Government grant via the Boiler Upgrade Scheme
- Ensure the new system settings are optimised for your home
- Provide you with all warranty and handover documents
🎛️ Step 7: Demonstration & Support
Before we leave, we’ll give you a full demonstration of how to use your new system, including adjusting temperatures and using the controls.
We’ll also answer any questions and ensure you feel confident using your new heating system.
🧹 Step 8: Clean, Tidy and Follow-Up
Our team will always leave your home clean and tidy.
After installation, we’ll check in to make sure everything is running smoothly and you're happy with your new system.
